Highlights from the Capital Creative Showcase 2026

2026-05-10

This weekend I attended the yearly Capital Creative Showcase(Opens in a new tab), a gaming convention for indie devs put on by the Sacramento Developer Collective(Opens in a new tab). This was one of the largest showcases ever held by the SDC with almost 90 games in total across indies, student projects, and even physical games. I wanted to take the opportunity to signal-boost some of the sick projects and developers I had a chance to talk with.

The Capital Creative Showcase is also running a Steam event! Make sure to check out some of the projects! https://store.steampowered.com/curator/45795899/sale/CCS2026(Opens in a new tab)

D-Beat Heroes

D-Beat-Heroes.png

D-Beat Heroes is an incredible kinetic and dynamic action game focused on grid-based, tactical positioning and timing. Absolutely outstanding game-feel and the visuals for both in-game pixel art as well as larger, rendered assets are so slick. Really really impressive vertical slice and a perfect mesh for people who love games that reward deep combo mastery and grinding out score challenges. Also gives off some SERIOUS Megaman Battle Network vibes!

Beat, Heart, Beat

beat-heart-beat.jpg

I fell in love with the visual style of Beat, Heart, Beat just seeing the booth from across the convention center. The game oozes styles, doubly-so when you get to hear the music that pumps along with a photo-bashed, absurdist rhythm platformer. As a piece of art, I just want to delve into the world and the themes and the characters, as a rhythm game--it flows super, super well! Gameplay-wise, the best thing I can compare it to is if someone took the musical levels from Rayman Legends but made an entire game out of it and it's superb. If you're like me and you like jumping, music, and games with a lot of heart, please give the demo a try!

Blocks for Babies

blocks-for-babies.jpg

Blocks for Babies is a game almost better served with no introduction--playing it at an open monitor screen with no info was perfect for distilling the tone of surprise of this title. However if that alone isn't enough, Blocks for Babies also received the Exhibitor's Choice award at this year's CCS for good reason: extremely funny, extremely funny to look at, and extremely fun to play. The core gameplay loop revolves between Tetris block stacking and switching perspectives to take out blocks with angry boomer shooter violence. I'm a huge roguelike fan and chatting with the dev after playtesting I'm super excited to see how run-by-run gameplay plays out with upgrades, new challenges, and an unraveling story. What a great concept for a game.

Gift of the Primordials

gift-of-the-primordials.jpg

Gift of the Primordials is a cozy, hex-based logic puzzle game based on fostering healthy ecosystems. It reminded me a lot of traditional logic puzzlers, but rather than focused on a theme like "programming" or "chemistry", it goes for a more magical, natural approach. I found the puzzles in the demo I played intuitive and the worldbuilding had a lot of charm; there's also some cool technical bits under-the-hood from my conversation with one of the developers. Puzzle games can be a hard thing to showcase in a busy, frantic convention environment and GotP managed to cut through the noise with a really pleasant project.

Raybounder

raybounder.jpg

Unlike some of the other titles on this list, Raybounder is actually available to play now! Raybounder is a puzzle game with pretty simple actions: you can move, throw a laser weapon, and fire the laser weapon to affect objects or move the gun. These simple verbs make for lots of interesting applications and mechanics. The demo I played on the convention floor was super, super well paced and I enjoyed my time with it. An odd comparison, but it reminds me a lot of the old-school Lego website flash games and I mean that with the highest praises.

Chợ Nổi

Ch-Ni.jpg

Chợ Nổi describes itself as monopoly/Mario Party style hybrid. It fits this descriptor perfectly, a digital board game that cuts-to-the-chase by putting the player right into the action. Players move around the board, attempting to collect food via rock-paper-scissors battles while also establishing stores for other players. It's pretty simple to pick up, but the mechanics seem to lend themselves to lots of RPG-like optimization and strategy. On top of all that, the art style is really cute and charming. Excited to see a demo drop for this one to see more of how it plays with a full 4-person squad!

GONERS

Goners.jpg

GONERS is a project I've been following for about 2 years since I first tried it at an SDC event in the past. I was immediately struck by the artistry and sincerity on display; I think something as creative as this game by Orbit Studios could end up being another indie darling for many players. From my chat with the dev team, it's one it's way inching closer and closer to release so keep an eye out for this story-driven puzzle adventure game soon!

This is merely a slice of the wonderful projects I got to try--and didn't!--at this year's Capital Creative Showcase. I would encourage you to explore the other wonderful games and talented game devs hosted by the SDC: https://www.capitalcreativeshowcase.com/(Opens in a new tab). I know I still have quite a bit to try myself!
